Nicodemus was home early and immediately climbed into bed. Right away he began to analyze his success at Prince and Princess Roztockiâs party.
Heâd been introduced to all the members of the highest aristocracy, and heâd met with their approval. Heâd received several invitations for later dates. He wrote them down in his notepad, because heâd decided to visit as many houses as possible. It couldnât hurt, and it just might help.
In fact, his opinion of the aristocracy was not high.
What a bunch of chumps, he thought. Anything you say to them, they fall all over themselves like you discovered America.
But that didnât mean he was planning to change his famous Man of Few Words routine.
Ruminating on these topics thwarted any chance of sleep. He tossed and turned, smoked one cigarette after another, and finally turned on the light.
He could always look through Ninaâs letters . . .
He had three large bundles, nearly all of them unopened. He lay down again and began to read. There were recurring topics: love, longing, hopes, requests for his return, plus no shortage of long psychological allocutions.
The letters were so boring that after a few minutes he tossed them on the floor and turned off the light again.
He thought about the women he had met in his life. There werenât many of them, and he had to admit that none of them required as much time and consideration as Nina did. He recalled MaÅka from Åucka Street. Sheâd probably gone completely to the dogs, but maybe sheâd finally gotten herself her working papers . . . Actually, he felt sorry for the girl . . . What would she say if she found out what a big deal their former tenant was these days . . . Her mouth would fall right open . . .
And what about these ladies heâd met at Prince Roztockiâs salon . . .
âSure, they were hot for me, but seriously, I wouldnât know what to do with that type . . . Theyâre all the same, though . . . Any healthy guy would fit the bill, and theyâre up for anything . . .â
